Romania: Constitutional Court validates first round of presidential elections. Second round will be held on Sunday

The Constitutional Court of Romania has validated the first round of the presidential elections, and the second round will take place on December 8. Călin Georgescu and Elena Lasconi will be on the ballot paper.

The recount of votes from the first round of the presidential elections in Romania did not bring significant changes, said Toni Greblă, head of the Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP). "There are no significant differences in terms of counting and, respectively, recounting the votes," he said for Digi24.

On Monday, December 2, at 5:00 p.m., the Constitutional Court will analyze the documents received from the Central Electoral Bureau (BEC) and will make a final decision on the validation of the results. The deadline for completing the recount was Thursday, at 10:00 p.m., and the BEC's conclusions are to be transmitted to the constitutional court.

The recount was ordered by the Constitutional Court following a complaint filed by Cristian Vasile Terheș. He claimed that the votes of the withdrawn candidate Ludovic Orban were erroneously redistributed to Elena Lasconi (USR). The checks carried out in the three indicated polling stations revealed only minor errors in the minutes and it did not affect the total number of votes obtained by Lasconi.

The final decision of the Constitutional Court will conclude the electoral process for the first round and will provide clarifications regarding the validation of the results.
