A man from Ungheni, sent to trial for electoral bribery

A 26-year-old man from Ungheni district will stand trial for electoral bribery. According to the Prosecutor General's Office (PG), the accused, together with other individuals, between October 1 and 20, allegedly offered sums of money to influence voters to vote for a certain candidate in the presidential elections and to boycott the Republican Constitutional Referendum.

During the investigation conducted by law enforcement officers, witnesses were heard who confirmed that they received money for voting, the PG states. Also, during the searches, currency exchange checks, lists of the people involved, sums of money, electronic means and other relevant evidence were seized. The means of transport used by the accused was seized, with the possibility of subsequent confiscation.

The cited source announces that concerning other suspects, the criminal prosecution was discontinued, and the investigations will continue.

Under the provisions of the Criminal Code, the act of electoral bribery imputed to the accused is punishable by a fine of up to 1150 conventional units or imprisonment of up to 5 years.

We remind you that the National Anticorruption Center (CNA) has so far applied sanctions totalling 9 million lei to voters who accepted money in exchange for voting in the presidential elections and the referendum.
