Presidential elections cancelled in Romania. Elena Lasconi: “The Romanian state trampled on democracy”
Elena Lasconi condemned the Constitutional Court’s decision to cancel the first round of the presidential elections on November 24. “Presidents are not appointed by a simple signature or through backstage negotiations in a democracy,” said the USR candidate who qualified for the second round of the presidential elections where she was supposed to face Călin Georgescu.
“Today is the day the Romanian state trampled on democracy. God, the Romanian people, truth and law will prevail and find those guilty of destroying democracy. The economy is collapsing, democracy is being destroyed, you are leading the country into anarchy, you should have gone ahead with the vote,” said Elena Lasconi.
“We should have respected the will of the Romanian people. Whether we like it or not, from a legal and legitimate point of view, 9 million Romanian citizens, both from the country and from the diaspora, expressed their preference for a certain candidate by voting. We cannot ignore their will! Presidents are not appointed by a simple signature or through backstage negotiations in a democracy. I know that I would have won. And I will win because the Romanian people know that I will fight for them, that I will unite them for a better Romania. I will defend our democracy. I will not give up”, Lasconi said.
The first round of the presidential elections was annulled, by the unprecedented decision taken by the Constitutional Court on Friday, according to the CCR press release. The decision comes two days before the 2nd round of the election, in which independent candidate Călin Georgescu and USR candidate Elena Lasconi entered, and in conditions in which the diaspora is already voting.
We remind you that the first round was validated by the CCR a week after the Court requested a recount of all over 9.4 million votes.
