Georgia arrests opposition leaders amid EU protest crackdown
Courts in Georgia have ordered the arrest of two opposition leaders, amid a crackdown on pro-European groups that supported protests against the government's delay in EU accession talks, according to Reuters.
Violent protests continued on Friday evening, with the ruling Georgian Dream party stating that the demonstrations were an attempt to incite a revolution.
The leader of the largest opposition party, the Coalition for Change, was sentenced to 12 days in prison for hooliganism and disobedience to police orders. Aleko Elisashvili, another prominent opposition figure, was placed in pre-trial detention for two months.
Eight other opposition activists detained in recent days were charged on Friday with "group violence" offenses, which carry a potential sentence of up to nine years in prison, according to local media.

The EU must take real steps & impose measures to support #GeorgiaProtests. Every day, protesters—young people included—are brutally beaten and poisoned with gas by the police. Hundreds are arrested & tortured. Dear European friends, now it’s your turn to act! #Georgia #Tbilisi pic.twitter.com/tJivua60j4
