US announces $988 million military aid for Ukraine
Washington is hurrying to deliver this aid to Kyiv before President-elect Donald Trump takes office on January 20, CBS NEWS reports.
Trump's victory in the November elections cast doubt on the future of U.S. aid to Ukraine, creating a limited window to provide billions of dollars in already-approved assistance before his inauguration next month.
The package includes drones, munitions for precision-guided HIMARS rocket launchers, and equipment and spare parts for artillery systems, tanks, and armored vehicles, according to a Pentagon statement.
This aid will be funded through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, in which military equipment is sourced from the defense industry or partners, rather than being taken from U.S. stockpiles, meaning it will not be immediately available on the battlefield.
This aid follows a $725 million package announced on Monday, which included a second tranche of land mines, along with anti-aircraft and anti-armor weapons.
