New hope for Copceac: Community Center opens
Residents of Copceac village in Gagauzia, a region with low incomes, will soon benefit from a new multifunctional community center.
This center will offer hot lunches and laundry facilities to those in need. Thanks to a €100,000 grant from the European Union and the UNDP, the canteen and communal laundry have been renovated.
"We understand that many young people are leaving, leaving behind a growing elderly population who may struggle to care for themselves. This community center will be a valuable resource, providing essential services like hot meals and laundry facilities," said a local resident.
"People can come here daily for a warm meal and to use the washing machines," added another.
"We hope residents will appreciate the center, visit regularly, and take advantage of all the services it offers," said the staff.
The center will also serve as a collection point for gently used items, such as furniture, appliances, and clothing. These donations will be distributed to those in need.
"Many people in our community replace perfectly good items with newer ones. We encourage them to donate these items to the center, where they can benefit those who are less fortunate," said Oleg Garizan, the mayor of Copceac.
"We are committed to supporting communities across Moldova, including through projects like this one. By investing in infrastructure, small businesses, tourism, NGOs, and social initiatives, we aim to improve the lives of all Moldovans," said Janis Mazeiks, the EU Ambassador to Chisinau.
In addition to Copceac, four other localities—Volintiri, Carpeni, Drochia, and Cimislia—have received similar grants. The total funding for these projects is nearly €400,000.
