Ukraine war toll: Zelenskiy reveals heavy losses
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that 43,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed and 370,000 wounded since the start of the war with Russia, as reported by Politico.
Until now, Ukrainian authorities have avoided giving specific figures for Kyiv's losses, only estimating Russian casualties at 750,000.
"Since the start of the war, Ukraine has lost 43,000 soldiers killed in action," Zelensky posted on social media on Sunday. He added that 370,000 soldiers have been wounded, half of whom have returned to the frontlines.
The Ukrainian president also said that Ukraine needs a sustainable peace that Russia cannot undermine in a few years by starting a new conflict.
"I stated that we need a just and lasting peace, a peace that the Russians cannot destroy in a few years, as they have done many times in the past," Zelensky emphasized on X, after his meeting with Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris.
Yesterday, I visited President @EmmanuelMacron at the Élysée Palace and had a good meeting with President @realDonaldTrump.

On the other hand, Zelensky claims 750,000 casualties among Russian forces, including 190,000 dead and over 550,000 wounded. "Since September of this year, Russia has been losing troops on the battlefield at a ratio of 5 to 1 or even 6 to 1 compared to us. They want to seize as much territory as possible before the global pressure on them becomes unbearable," Zelensky added.
US President-elect Donald Trump called on Sunday for an immediate ceasefire and negotiations to end the conflict in Ukraine, on his Truth Social platform.
"We should have an immediate ceasefire, and negotiations should start. Too many lives have been lost in vain, too many families have been destroyed, and if this continues, it could turn into something bigger, something worse," Trump wrote, adding that Ukraine has lost a ridiculous 400,000 soldiers and more civilians.
