Maia Sandu had a meeting with Mark Rutte

President Maia Sandu recently met with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at NATO Headquarters in Brussels to discuss key issues affecting the region. Their conversation focused on regional security and hybrid threats, including electoral interference and corruption, as well as the protection of democracies in the area.

During her address to the North Atlantic Council (NAC)—the main decision-making body of NATO composed of representatives from its 32 member states—President Sandu emphasized Moldova's commitment to maintaining peace and stability amidst the ongoing conflict at its border. She highlighted the nation's efforts to bolster its resilience against hybrid threats.

Additionally, President Sandu and Mark Rutte discussed the tactics used for external interference in democratic processes, such as illicit party financing and misinformation campaigns, which undermine democracy and erode citizens' trust. She stressed the importance of international cooperation to defend democracies worldwide and to promote peace.

“The visit to NATO Headquarters underscores the Republic of Moldova's dedication to collaborating with partner countries to ensure citizen security, protect democratic processes within our nation, and strengthen our role as a reliable partner in regional security”, reads a press release of the Presidency.

As of now, the incident has resulted in at least four deaths and approximately 200 injuries. The identities of all the victims have not yet been disclosed, and authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the event.
