Energy crisis: Power outages expected for both banks of the Nistru in 2025
Residents of the Transnistrian region may welcome the new year without electricity. Authorities in Tiraspol have announced that if Russian gas supplies are halted, the Cuciurgan Power Plant will switch to coal. This transition carries significant risks of power outages in the region. Meanwhile, officials in Chisinau warn that a similar risk exists for residents on the right bank of the Nistru. Prime Minister Dorin Recean reassured the public that any potential power outages would be brief and would not affect the entire country.
The so-called Minister of Economic Development in Tiraspol said that residents in the region could experience blackouts lasting up to 10 hours as the power plant transitions to coal.
“Both coal-fired units are old, and there is a substantial risk that one of them may fail. This would require us to rely on the other unit, which could result in total power outages lasting up to 10 hours,” said Serghei Obolonik, the alleged minister of economic development.
In Chisinau, there are discussions of a similar risk for residents on the right bank. According to Prime Minister Recean, if the Kremlin stops supplying natural gas to the left bank of the Nistru, changes will be necessary in the energy network that supplies our region. Additionally, due to ongoing bombings, the Isaccea-Vulcănești-Chisinau line may be affected, increasing the risk of power outages. Nevertheless, the Prime Minister assured that any outages will be short-lived and will not impact the entire country.
We remind you that the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova approved a state of emergency in the energy sector, starting on December 16, for 60 days. The government requested this measure due to uncertainties regarding gas supplies from the Russian Federation to the Transnistrian region, which will come into effect on January 1, 2025, when the transit contract through Ukraine expires.
