EU backs Moldova's energy security and integration
The European Council has urged the European Commission to urgently devise new solutions to bolster Moldova's energy security.
This comes as the country grapples with severe vulnerabilities in this sector, exacerbated by regional instability, according to a Council communiqué.
In the conclusions adopted after the 19 December Summit, European leaders reaffirmed their support for Moldova, emphasizing the importance of close cooperation to enhance the country's resilience and stability. Additionally, the European Union supports the implementation of the Growth Plan and the rapid adoption of the Reform and Recovery Facility, deemed crucial for Moldova's economic advancement and European integration.
Starting in 2025, Moldova will gain access to 1.8 billion euros in EU funding.
Furthermore, European leaders welcomed the successful presidential elections and the referendum on enshrining EU accession in the Constitution, despite Russia's hybrid activities to undermine the country's democratic institutions. The European Council commends the Moldovan people's commitment to European integration.
