Country's leadership in discussion with members of the Gagauz community, on the eve of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of autonomy
President Maia Sandu, together with the Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu and Prime Minister Dorin Recean, had a discussion with members of the Gagauz community on Friday, December 20, on the eve of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of autonomy. The participants in the discussion stressed the importance of coordinated efforts to ensure that the Gagauz language and culture are transmitted to future generations, reads a statement from the presidential administration.
The president reaffirmed the support of the central authorities for close cooperation with the Gagauz community in order to protect its cultural identity. In this context, the need for effective educational programs, teaching resources and the training of specialized teachers for teaching the Gagauz language was discussed.
During the discussion, a call for unity was launched and the idea that the Republic of Moldova is the common home of all its citizens, and the Romanian language is an essential element for the harmonious integration of the Gagauz Autonomy into the national context, facilitating access to education and jobs. The participants also drew attention to the danger of disinformation, highlighting the need for the region to be well-connected in terms of information and to have access to credible sources of information.
On December 23, 1994, the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova adopted the Law on the Special Legal Status of the Gagauz Autonomy, with the main objective of protecting and promoting the cultural, linguistic and traditional identity of the Gagauz community. However, although the Gagauz language was included in 2010 on the UNESCO list of endangered languages, measures to protect it have been insufficient to date, reads the press release.
