New agricultural aid law fails to address farmers' struggles
The new agricultural aid law has left Moldovan farmers dissatisfied.
They argue that their proposals, discussed earlier on the parliamentary platform, were omitted from the document, and that the law’s eligibility criteria make its beneficiaries exceedingly few.
Farmers claim that the new law benefits only a narrow group of recipients and demand renewed talks with authorities. During these meetings, they plan to present detailed lists of farmers affected by this year’s drought.
"Once again, they have repeated the same mistakes as before. They admitted that the law is ineffective. Under Law 240, there were about 27 beneficiaries nationwide; this new law might double that figure. The criteria focus on those already in a critical financial state, facing imminent foreclosure, yet they still won’t qualify for this law’s benefits," said Alexandru Brînza, president of the Farmers’ Force organization.
Parliament has enacted a moratorium on debt payments for farmers impacted by this year’s drought. The new law allows for the deferral of overdue debt payments, including interest and penalties, until October 31, 2025. Additionally, the document outlines plans to revise the eligibility criteria for indebted farmers.
