Former rector of the State University of Moldova Gheorghe Ciocanu dies

Professor Gheorghe Ciocanu, a distinguished figure in education and research in the Republic of Moldova, passed away, as announced by the State University of Moldova (USM). He served as the Rector of USM from 2007 to 2020 and he dedicated his entire career to advancing higher education and promoting academic excellence.

Born in 1953 in the village of Pârlița, Fălești district, Gheorghe Ciocanu graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics and Cybernetics at USM. He pursued his studies at the Academy of Sciences of Moldova and was awarded the title of PhD in 1995. His academic career included significant roles, such as head of the Department of Algebra and Geometry at USM, dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, and head of the Research and Development Department at the Ministry of Education.

Appointed interim rector of USM in 2007, he was subsequently elected to the position in 2008. Gheorghe Ciocanu was a respected leader, recognized for his contributions to the modernization and development of the largest university in the country.

The academic community conveys condolences to his grieving family.
