The EU sanctions against Russia extended

The EU has decided on Friday to renew sanctions against Russia for six months for triggering the war in Ukraine and is readying new measures against Moscow, Agerpres reports.

Sanctions, imposed as Moscow annexed the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea in 2014, have been considerably tightened after the outbreak of the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. They have been systematically continued for six-month periods over the past eight years.

The EU imposed nine rounds of sanctions on Russia after the invasion on 24 February last year. The measures have notably impacted Russia's main oil exports, effectively cut Russian banks off from the Swift global payment system and targeted President Vladimir Putin in particular.
