Tiraspol's solution for gas supply through Hungarian trader is not sustainable, Prime Minister

Prime Minister Dorin Recean stated after today’s Government meeting that the method proposed by Tiraspol for supplying natural gas to the Transnistrian region through a Hungarian trader, funded by a Dubai-based company, is not sustainable. He emphasized that the regime on the left bank of the Nistru rejected the solution put forth by the European Union due to pressure from the Russian Federation, which aims to maintain its control over the Transnistrian region.

Those on the left bank of the Nistru are not ready to accept the European Union's offer, as it is seen as the only sustainable solution for long-term regional stability. The government maintains that it is not engaged in any transaction; instead, it urges those on the left bank to accept the EU's offer of 60 million euros in aid. Currently, it appears that they have been prevented from accepting this offer due to its specific conditions.

Dorin Recean stated that the Hungarian company MET Group is prepared to transport natural gas to the left bank of the Nistru, provided that the Ukrainian Gas Transmission System Operator permits the transit. The Ukrainian operator has confirmed that discussions regarding this matter are ongoing and noted, in response to Teleradio-Moldova, that it offers free access to its capacities to all clients with a transport contract at all cross-border interconnection points, by European legislation.

The European Union has proposed an additional 60 million euros in support for the Transnistrian region to help address the energy crisis. However, this aid is conditioned on the respect for human rights on the left bank of the Nistru and a gradual increase in tariffs. Tiraspol has rejected this offer.

We remind you that, under the Commission for Emergencies, on February 11, Moldovagaz sent three million cubic meters of gas to Tiraspoltransgaz as a loan. This was aimed at maintaining the operation of the natural gas transport system and ensuring reliable energy supply for the Republic of Moldova. Starting February 13, Tiraspol will receive three million cubic meters of gas daily, with any additional volume subject to taxation by the Chisinau authorities. Tiraspol leader Vadim Krasnoselki has confirmed that gas supplies to the region will continue with the support of Moldovagaz, attributing this solution to "financial and operational support from Russia."
