Maia Sandu, message for Klaus Iohannis: The Republic of Moldova had a reliable friend in Bucharest during these difficult years

Moldovan President Maia Sandu expressed her gratitude to Klaus Iohannis for the support Romania has offered to the Republic of Moldova during his time in office at Cotroceni Palace. This message of thanks was conveyed on Wednesday as Iohannis officially handed over his mandate to interim president Ilie Bolojan.

The relationship between the two banks of the Prut is now stronger and more comprehensive than ever. The Republic of Moldova has had a reliable friend in Bucharest during these challenging years. Under President Klaus Iohannis's leadership, we could always count on Romania's support—ranging from energy supply to local infrastructure projects in our villages, from vaccine provision during the pandemic to the construction of new bridges, both literally and figuratively," said the head of state.

President Maia Sandu also highlighted that Moldova's European path would not have been possible without Romania's genuine and unconditional support.

"On behalf of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, I want to thank President Klaus Iohannis for everything we have achieved together. I am confident that on this solid foundation, we will continue to build a secure and prosperous future, united by the same language, history, culture, values, and aspirations," the head of state added.

President Klaus Iohannis concluded his ten-year term as head of state at Cotroceni Palace on Wednesday. His term was extended after the cancellation of the second round of voting, following a resignation that represents an unprecedented decision in Romanian politics for a head of state.

The former liberal leader Ilie Bolojan will temporarily occupy the highest office in the Romanian state for approximately three months, as presidential elections are scheduled to be held in Romania on May 4.
