Romania not invited to Paris summit on Ukraine, says Diaconescu

Romania was not invited to the Paris summit on Ukraine, hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron.

Presidential advisor Cristian Diaconescu explained the situation on Sunday evening during an interview on Digi24. He stated that the meeting is informal, with no decisions concerning regional security or the Eastern flank, and Romania’s presence was not required.

Cristian Diaconescu clarified that this meeting brings together a group that has met twice before and focuses on European defense support for Ukraine.

"As I understand it, the discussion will focus on European defense capabilities for Ukraine, aimed at providing credible security guarantees. Additionally, there will be a plan that would allow Ukraine to automatically join NATO if a ceasefire agreement, which we hope will be established soon, is violated by Russia," the presidential advisor explained.

He emphasized that the summit would not make decisions directly affecting Romania: "No decisions will be made regarding security, regional stability, the Eastern flank, or Romania specifically."

The official assured that Romania is actively engaged in international dialogue and that there is no division within Europe regarding support for Ukraine. "We, from the Presidential Administration and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, are in contact with our French partners and others. These discussions will continue as part of an initiative by a working group formed some time ago," he said.
