Ukraine's Prime Minister hopes Ukraine will become a member of the European Union over the next two years

Prime Minister of Ukraine Denis Shmihal expressed hope that Ukraine would join the European Union in the next two years. Speaking in an interview with Politico.eu, the Ukrainian official acknowledged that that was an ambitious goal and that many European politicians considered it unrealistic, but hoped that in 2023 the pre-accession stage of negotiations would already start.

Denis Shmihal, Ukraine's prime minister, stressed that Ukraine had to implement the necessary reforms rapidly, particularly as regards the functioning of the constitutional court. According to him, Ukraine has already implemented a number of measures, but these are not enough, as the Venice Commission has pointed out.

Kiev will host the Ukraine-EU summit on 3 February, and the Ukrainian Prime Minister is hopeful that the partners together will make progress on the visa-free regime for industrial products, the abolition of customs duties on Ukrainian exports for another year, accession to the pan-European system for bank transfers in euros and Ukraine's entry into the EU's free roaming zone.

In June 2022, EU leaders supported the accession of Ukraine and Moldova to the EU.
