The Republic of Moldova and the French Development Agency signed a €30 million agreement in Paris on Monday to improve energy efficiency. Macron: Moldova targeted by Russian destabilization attempts
Discussions between French President Emmanuel Macron and Moldovan President Maia Sandu focused on the security of the Republic of Moldova, particularly in light of the ongoing war in Ukraine and the pressures exerted by Moscow. Macron stated that Russia is intensifying its efforts to destabilize Moldova, specifically targeting the country’s democratic institutions, Reuters reports.
"Moldova, which frequently experiences violations of its airspace by Russian drones and missiles, must confront increasingly evident attempts at destabilization by Russia, particularly aimed at its democratic institutions," declared Macron at the Élysée Palace.
Sandu: Moscow aims to use Moldova as a launching pad for aggression
During the same press conference, President Maia Sandu emphasized the need for ongoing support from European partners for Ukraine. She warned that Russia intends to take control of the Republic of Moldova and use it against Kyiv.
"Moscow's strategy is clear: to exploit Moldova's vulnerabilities, undermine our democracy, and turn our territory into a launching pad for future aggression. Therefore, the security of Ukraine is the security of Moldova, and the peace of Moldova is the peace of Europe," Sandu asserted.
The President also reiterated that the Republic of Moldova aims to join the European Union by 2030. In response, Macron reaffirmed France's support for Moldova in its EU accession process, emphasizing France's commitment to Chisinau amid the war in Ukraine and the necessary reforms for European integration.
