Tragedy in Anenii Noi: A 9-year-old girl drowned in a drainage canal while trying to retrieve a ball
A nine-year-old girl died after she drowned in a water drainage canal in Chirca, Anenii Noi district. The tragedy occurred on the afternoon of March 19.
According to the General Inspectorate for Emergencies (IGSU), the girl was near a football field with other children when a ball fell into the canal. As they tried to retrieve it, three children were trapped. A nearby woman managed to rescue two of them, but the intervention for the 9-year-old girl was too late.
Divers from the General Inspectorate for Emergencies recovered the child's body from a depth of 2.5 meters.
Authorities are investigating the exact circumstances of the incident.
In this context, rescuers urge parents and caregivers to supervise children and prevent them from playing in dangerous areas such as drainage canals, riverbanks, rooftops, wells, water reservoirs, bridges, or construction sites. Adults are also encouraged to teach children safety rules and to report any risky situations to prevent such tragedies.
In the past 24 hours, rescuers and firefighters responded to 62 emergencies.
