Pistols, revolvers, carbines and other firearms, a total of over 2,000 units, were destroyed by melting at a metallurgical plant in the village of Bulboaca, Anenii Noi district. These are weapons confiscated from criminals or voluntarily handed over by citizens due to malfunctions. The scrapping of the weapons cost 38 thousand dollars and was carried out with the financial assistance of the European Union and UNDP.

The weapons and ammunition were placed in a furnace, where they were melted at a temperature of 1400 degrees. According to the police, the entire process lasted four days and was monitored by masked men from Fulger.

According to the UNDP Armed Violence Monitoring Platform, in 2024, 113 incidents with firearms were reported in the Republic of Moldova, a slight increase compared to 2023.

"There are over 66 weapons that were used in various incidents. As many as nine weapons were used by people in suicide cases. Some weapons were used or were present with people who committed acts of domestic violence*”, says Dorel Nistor, head of weapons surveillance, INSP.

The most expensive weapon to be melted is worth 20 thousand lei.

"With the relaunch of the State Register of Weapons, my colleagues in the territory re-checked the lists of owners; as a result, several weapons were detected that had an uncertain status and I refer to smooth-bore weapons. The control of small arms and light weapons is the order of the day", says the State Secretary at the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Alexandru Bejan.

From 2005 to the present, nine such exercises were carried out, destroying about 13 thousand firearms with the financial support of the European Union and UNDP. The last procedure for melting down firearms occurred in 2023.
