Prosecutors request pretrial detention for judge Tamara Mereuță

Moldovan prosecutors have requested 30 days of pretrial detention for Judge Tamara Mereuță of the Hîncești Court, who was arrested recently and is being investigated for corruption-related offenses.
The motion is scheduled to be reviewed today by the Ciocana Court. It should be noted that the judge's son, a lawyer, is also implicated in the case.
In a press statement, the judge characterized the prosecutors' actions as unjust and influenced by extrajudicial factors. She claims the arrest is a result of her decision to acquit another judge.
The judge argues that penalizing her for performing her judicial duties sets a dangerous precedent and constitutes a direct assault on judicial independence.
It is worth mentioning that Tamara Mereuță was arrested after prosecutors and NAC officers uncovered a network that influenced cases, with other members of the judiciary also implicated. Besides Judge Tamara Mereuță, three other judges are accused of accepting bribes to influence case outcomes.
