Plastic, glass and aluminum containers will be returned against payment in Moldova

Plastic, glass and aluminum containers serving as packaging for drinks sold in Moldova could be returned against payment. The Ministry of Environment aims to reduce waste quantities and promote more environmentally responsible behavior.
The selection procedure for the Administrator who will manage the packaging deposit system was analyzed during a meeting between representatives of the Ministry of Environment and producers, traders of beverages bottled in disposable and reusable packaging.
Under this mechanism, an additional tax will be added to the price of the beverage, which consumers will recover when they return the packaging.
"After consumption, people will be able to return the packaging and receive back the amount initially paid. The goal is to change people's mentality, so that they no longer view packaging as simple waste, but as objects that can be recycled and reused", reads the cited source.
The administrator of the system will be designated by producers who own at least 60% of the total volume of packaging placed on the market. The system will be mandatory at national level, applicable to both domestic producers and importers.
