PSRM seeks "immediate" and "unconditional" resignation of Veronica Mihailov-Moraru. Ministry of Justice reacts

The Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM) seeks the "immediate" and "unconditional" resignation of Justice Minister Veronica Mihailov-Moraru, following the release of several life-sentenced prisoners from prisons, based on the 2021 and 2022 amendments to the Amnesty Law and the Criminal Code. The party qualifies the situation as serious and attributes it to "negligence, irresponsibility and, possibly, conscious involvement" on the part of some state officials. We called the Ministry of Justice but it said it would not comment on the PSRM request.

" Minister of Justice, Veronica Mihailov-Moraru, must resign immediately. Her silence and lack of responsibility are unacceptable," the PSRM states in the statement.

In this context, the Socialists called for "the urgent revision of the Amnesty Law and the opening of criminal investigations for those involved."

"If it is proven that the responsible persons were informed about the possible risks, but allowed this to happen, their names must be made public," the political party states.

We remind you that on April 4, in two readings, the Parliament urgently voted to amend the article in the Amnesty Law, which made possible the recent release of several criminals previously sentenced to life imprisonment. Thus, a convicted person whose sentence has been reduced or commuted will not be able to be released on parole before the end of the term.

On the same day, PAS decided to exclude MP Olesea Stamate from the party and asked her to resign, accusing her of having used it to create a “vicious process” that made possible the conditional release of at least two criminals sentenced to life imprisonment. In an initial reaction, Olesea Stamate announced that she accepted the decision to exclude her from PAS, claiming that her actions were correct and legal, “despite the attacks of the last few days”. She later said that she still did not know whether she would resign as requested by the leadership of the Action and Solidarity Party.

In a comment for Teleradio-Moldova, the spokesperson for the Prosecutor General’s Office, Violina Moraru, stated that “the prosecutor’s office is examining the circumstances of the release of life convicts from all aspects”.
