In 2022, Energocom purchased electricity from 10 producers from the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and Romania

In 2022, SA Energocom purchased electricity directly from 10 producers from the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and Romania, as well as from several economic agents that hold the status of eligible producer of renewable energy, reads a press release of the company.

Also, unlike in 2021, last year the thermal power plants in Chisinau and Balti generated less electricity. One of the explanations can be the milder temperatures, which led to a more rational gas consumption.

According to the provisions of the Commission for Emergency Situations, in the period May-December 2022, the company was authorized to buy the necessary electricity on the market. In total, last year, a volume of 3.2 mln. MWh, at an average price of around 2,085 lei/MWh (or 2.08 lei/kWh). Of the total volumes purchased, about 9% represents electricity produced in the Republic of Moldova (right bank of the Nistru). The largest part, about 57%, was bought from the Moldovan Thermal Power Plant in the Transnistrian region (MGRES), and a third of the volume was imported electricity - from Ukraine and Romania.

Last year, SA Energocom concluded for the first time electricity procurement contracts directly, without intermediaries, from producers in Ukraine and Romania, and when the Cuciurgan Power Plant no longer sold electricity to the right bank of the Nistru, it also procured on the Romanian stock exchange, after it -previously got a trading license from ANRE Romania and opening a branch in Romania.

This helped the Republic of Moldova, in November 2022, to acquire 82% of the electricity needed from Romania, following the reduction of the gas quantities delivered to Moldova by the Gazprom concern and the attacks on several energy targets in Ukraine. Unlike 2021, last year the thermal power plants in Chisinau and Balti generated less electricity. One of the explanations can be the milder temperatures, which led to a more rational gas consumption.

At the same time, there is a slight increase in the volume of renewable energy (only the contracts concluded by SA Energocom with companies holding the status of eligible producer are taken into account). In the months of June-September, when the CETs minimize their activity, the green energy procured by SA Energocom exceeds the quantities supplied by the CETs.

Regarding purchase prices, the lowest price for 1 kWh is at MGRES, where the average price in 2022 was the equivalent of 1.19 lei. From Ukraine SA Energocom purchased on average 1 kWh for 1.51 lei. On the local market (the right bank of the Nistru River) 1 kWh was 3.5 lei, and in Romania, especially the purchases on the stock market, led to average price of about 3.72 Moldovan lei.
