Moldova modernizes passports, ready Jan 1, 2026

Moldovan authorities will begin issuing modernized passports and travel documents starting January 1, 2026.
These documents will meet the technical requirements set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and European Union regulations. A draft law to this effect was approved by the Government today.
The new documents will feature information in three languages: Romanian, English, and French, facilitating their international recognition and use.
"This project aims to enhance the security of travel documents to prevent the falsification and illicit use of identity documents and streamline verification processes at border crossings," stated Minister of Internal Affairs, Daniella Misail-Nichitin. "The project introduces some new specifications for the structure of the optical reading zone codes and the implementation of additional requirements. Approving the project will contribute to protecting citizens' rights and freedoms in the context of safer international travel."
The documents will be issued for different periods, depending on the person's age or status, and can be valid for up to 10 years. Issuing authorities will vary based on the applicant's status or document type. The Public Services Agency will issue documents for citizens of the Republic of Moldova. The General Inspectorate for Migration of the Ministry of Internal Affairs will issue documents for stateless persons, refugees, and beneficiaries of humanitarian protection. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will issue diplomatic and service passports.
