The Liberal Party of Canada, led by Prime Minister Mark Carney, managed to consolidate its position in the parliamentary elections held on Monday, April 28, but it is still uncertain whether it will be able to obtain an absolute majority in Parliament. According to preliminary data, the Liberals are in the lead. They won in 167 electoral districts, or 167 seats in the House of Commons – the lower house of Parliament.
Mark Carney, the leader of the Liberal Party, claimed victory in the federal election in Canada, promising to defend national sovereignty in the face of pressure from US President Donald Trump. Although the Liberals won enough seats to remain in government, they narrowly missed the absolute majority of 172 seats needed to govern alone. With 167 seats won, Carney will have to form a minority government and work with other parties to ensure legislative stability.
In his victory speech, Carney delivered a message of strength and unity, accusing the Trump administration of trying to "break up" Canada and annex it as the "51st American state." "America wants our land, our resources, our water, our country. These are not empty threats. But this will never happen," Carney told supporters gathered in Ottawa.
A former governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, Carney is the first Canadian prime minister to take office without parliamentary or cabinet experience.
