PAS and PSRM representatives comment on the first-round results of Romania’s presidential election

Following the first round of the presidential elections in Romania, we sought the opinions of several Moldovan Members of Parliament, including those from opposition parties, regarding the election results. While members of the ruling party expressed their views openly and emphasized the significance of Romania's pro-European direction, representatives from the PSRM refrained from commenting, stating that they do not engage in the electoral processes of other countries.

Reserved reactions from PSRM

PSRM MP Corneliu Furculiță stated that he has suspended all his Romanian documents during his term and, therefore, does not comment on the electoral process in Romania.

MP Radu Mudreac did not respond to calls, and PSRM municipal councilor Adrian Lebedinschi refused to comment.

PSRM communications officer Carmena Lupei stated that the party would provide a reaction after the second round of the elections. She did not give details on the PSRM’s official position or the deputies holding Romanian citizenship. “We are waiting for the final results of the second round,” Lupei said.

PAS opinion

Deputy Radu Marian (PAS) told Teleradio-Moldova that he voted for Romania to maintain its Western path, "to be anchored in the European Union and NATO. This is an essential step not only for the prosperity of Romania but also for the development of the Republic of Moldova."

The member of Parliament also drew attention to the risk of extremism's rise and called for a responsible vote in the second round.

We remind you that the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) announced its support for Crin Antonescu's candidacy in the presidential elections in Romania as the candidate of the governing coalition in Bucharest. However, Antonescu did not collect enough votes to advance to the second round of the election. Antonescu came in third place, after the independent candidate Nicușor Dan.

George Simion, leader of the far-right party Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR), and Nicușor Dan, independent candidate and mayor of Bucharest, qualified for the second round of the presidential elections in Romania.

In the Republic of Moldova, Nicușor Dan won the first round of the elections, with 52.63% of the votes. Romanian citizens from the left bank of the Nistru also voted.

The electoral campaign for the second round will officially begin on May 9, and the vote is scheduled for May 18, 2025.
