Expert: Commissioner Marta Kos’s visit signals strengthened European support

The visits of top officials to Chisinau, including European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, reaffirm the European Union's commitment to supporting the Republic of Moldova's European integration. Grigore Guzun, expert in international relations, notes that these visits demonstrate the EU's support and friendship toward our country. He emphasizes that Moldova's accession to the EU largely depends on the political class's willingness and the outcomes of the parliamentary elections scheduled for the fall.
Marta Kos, the European Commissioner for Enlargement, plays a crucial role in shaping the European future of the Republic of Moldova. Her recent visit signifies a strong message of friendship and support for Chisinau, especially on Europe Day. This visit underscores the commitment to integrating the Republic of Moldova into the European Union and highlights the political and technical backing for necessary reforms.
Experts emphasize that the Growth Plan, valued at 1.9 billion euros, is vital for the country's pivotal European path.
The nearly 2 billion euro financial package is essential for our European journey, and the success of the reforms outlined by the government, which are based on seven key pillars, hinges on how swiftly we progress towards EU accession. Without this support and funding, it would be nearly impossible to advance efficiently. Historically, all countries that have joined the EU have undergone a similar process.
Grigore Guzun also pointed out that while European support is robust, the country's accession largely depends on the will and maturity of its political class.
“There should be no doubts,” Guzun stated. “We are witnessing not just verbal support but tangible assistance. However, our future relies significantly on how quickly we proceed towards accession here in the Republic of Moldova and on our political maturity to implement these reforms. It’s also important to acknowledge that we have backing from Poland, which currently holds the presidency of the Council of the European Union. Ultimately, everything hinges on our political class, particularly with the parliamentary elections set for this fall.”
The European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, is on an official visit to the Republic of Moldova from May 8 to 12. She is accompanied by a delegation that includes Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) Siegfried Mureșan and Daniel Barna, along with officials from the European Commission. This visit coincides with Europe Day. During her trip, Marta Kos will visit various locations including Ungheni, Orhei, Negureni, Edineț, Bălți, Comrat, Cahul, and Văleni.
A significant event during this visit is the signing of the Growth Plan for Moldova.
We remind you that the European Parliament approved the Growth Plan worth 1.9 billion euros for the Republic of Moldova on March 11. This initiative, launched by the European Commission in October 2024, comprises a financial package designed to support the country’s reforms, investments, and economic integration. This program represents the largest support ever provided to the Republic of Moldova by the EU, aimed at benefiting its citizens.
