Siegfried Mureșan: Nicușor Dan’s election is a strong pro-EU signal for Moldova

Romania will continue to support the Republic of Moldova with the same level of intensity, stated MEP Siegfried Mureșan during the "La 360 de grade" program on Radio Moldova. This statement follows the victory of pro-European candidate Nicușor Dan in the presidential elections in Romania.
Voters from the Republic of Moldova, who participated in record numbers in this election, demonstrated that they understood the stakes of the elections. Siegfried Mureșan also said that this mobilisation is a signal for the elected president of Romania to support our country.
By voting, the citizens of the Republic of Moldova helped Romania, but at the same time, they ensured that the future president of Romania would prioritise the Republic of Moldova because there were many of them, and they voted overwhelmingly in favor of a pro-European path.
Effective communication with citizens, countering disinformation and other foreign interference are some of the lessons that the Republic of Moldova could learn from the presidential election in Romania, Siegfried Mureșan said. He emphasized that only a pro-European government can continue the current course of our country's accession to the European Union.
We know there will undoubtedly be interference in future campaigns in the candidate countries for accession to the European Union. It is imperative that the authorities are vigilant and that people are informed from credible sources to see the dangers. I think it is essential that people know what the threat of extremism is and why these extremist populists, who want disorder and who take to the streets to protest, have no solutions to the people's problems.
Nicușor Dan's victory in this election brings Romania back to a zone of normality, said Bucharest political analyst Sorin Ioniță.
It means releasing us from a great stress that we have been under for half a year, since the cancelled elections in November, and returning to a framework of normality. I am not referring only to this period, but also to the previous political years in Romania, which were not very good. They stood under the shadow of President Iohannis and the so-called stability coalition, which created the political moment of November 2024, and this crisis. Somehow, we returned to the normality of having a president who is a different political leader from the others, having a mandate and being mayor of Bucharest.
Over 158,000 Romanian citizens from the Republic of Moldova voted in the presidential elections in Romania, in the 64 polling stations open on the country's territory. In a Romanian presidential election, this is the most significant number of voters registered so far in the Republic of Moldova.

The second round's turnout was significantly higher than the first round on May 4. Approximately 91 thousand Romanian citizens voted in the 64 polling stations in the Republic of Moldova.
