Romania to boost ties as Moldova targets EU by 2030

Moldova's main objective is integration into the European Union, Romania's new President Nicușor Dan said in an interview.

The Cotroceni (Romania's presidential palace) leader mentioned a timeline up to 2030 that Romania must support both diplomatically and operationally, adding that Romania has pre-accession experience that it can share with the Republic of Moldova.

Asked on Thursday at the Black Sea and Balkans Security Forum 2025 whether he intends to change anything in Romania's relations with Moldova, perhaps towards a deeper development, Nicușor Dan replied:

Romania's policy towards the Republic of Moldova has been the right one. The fact that we have an energy partnership has reduced Moldova's energy dependence on the Russian Federation. Now, in my opinion, the main objective of the Republic of Moldova is integration into the European Union. He added that it is necessary to expand energy connectivity with Moldova.

It is necessary to extend the connection of the transportation networks with the Republic of Moldova. An economic connection through a guarantee fund for Romanian investments in the Republic of Moldova is also necessary and has long been proposed. This is something we need to do and, of course, talking to Romanians living in Bessarabia, we have two functional, seemingly trivial problems: the time spent at customs between the two states and the process of obtaining Romanian citizenship. These two problems need to be solved. And, of course, the cultural and academic exchanges must continue, perhaps at a higher level than before.

The new Romanian President added that he would like his first official visit as President of Romania to be to the Republic of Moldova, reports News.ro.
