Moldova's healthcare system is being modernized with Japan's support

The Republic of Moldova is enhancing its healthcare system by making significant investments in infrastructure and medical equipment, with support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency. Over the past three years, around eight million euros have been allocated for hospital modernization. On Monday, representatives from the agency visited the Mother and Child Institute (IMC) in Chisinau to observe the improvements made through these projects.

“When I arrived here, I observed numerous challenging medical issues arising from the influx of refugees from Ukraine. We provided medical equipment, such as infant incubators, to five hospitals in Chisinau,” stated JICA President Tanaka Akihiko.
“With the ongoing support of the Government of Japan and JICA, this institution has received essential equipment necessary for the safe and high-quality care of mothers, newborns, and children,” said Health Minister Ala Nemerenco.
“Thanks to our collaborative efforts, our institution has been equipped with the latest medical technology across various departments,” said IMC Director Sergiu Gladun.

The Institute of Mother and Child has received over 15 million lei worth of modern medical equipment in the past three years. The facility now has advanced ultrasound machines, gastroscopes, neonatal incubators, and anesthesia machines. Medical professionals state that this high-performance equipment enables them to respond quickly in critical situations.
"We work in a comfortable environment for the children's benefit, which leads to greater efficiency. Children now have access to high-quality incubators that help maintain their temperature, essential for their well-being," says Olga Vidaico, head of the Newborn Resuscitation Department.
"It was very challenging for us before. The old equipment left much to be desired, and we had to rely heavily on our medical intuition and clinical knowledge. Now, the availability of advanced paraclinical support is a tremendous advantage," says Tatiana Gorelco, head of the Pediatrics Clinic.

The Mother and Child Institute is not the only medical institution modernized with the support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency. The "Valentin Ignatenco" Municipal Children's Clinical Hospital has a computed tomography scanner worth over 15 million lei. By autumn, the Institute of Emergency Medicine, the "Timofei Moșneaga" Republican Clinical Hospital, the Oncological Institute, and the "Sfânta Treime" Hospital will also be equipped.
