Moldovans in four more countries to vote by mail; draft approved in final reading

Moldovan citizens residing in Japan, Australia, the Republic of Korea, and New Zealand can vote by mail in this autumn's parliamentary elections. Today, Parliament approved a bill in its second reading that expands the number of countries where this alternative voting method will be available. This initiative aims to facilitate the participation of citizens living abroad in the electoral process.
A legislative initiative developed by a group of PAS deputies aims to prevent procedural errors and enhance the transparency and security of postal voting. This initiative was motivated by the experiences gained during the presidential elections and the republican constitutional referendum held in 2024, when postal voting was used for the first time.
Last year, Moldovans living in the United States, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland could vote by mail, following a law previously adopted by Parliament. The new law, adopted today, expands this framework to include additional countries with significant Moldovan communities.
Additionally, Parliament approved another draft law to improve electoral legislation and political party operations. This legislation is based on electoral observers' recommendations and the Constitutional Court's findings regarding deficiencies identified in the electoral process. The bill's authors emphasize that the proposed measures aim to strengthen a fair and predictable electoral process that aligns with international standards.
It is important to note that parliamentary elections in the Republic of Moldova will occur on September 28. 57 deputies approved this decision during the plenary session on April 17.
