Volodimir Zelenski considers it "possible" for talks on Ukraine's EU membership to start this year

Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski stated on Friday that it was "possible" that formal talks on his country's accession to the European Union might begin this year, reports AFP, quoted by Agerpres.

"What have we really agreed on today?" Zelenski remarked in his traditional daily evening address at the end of the EU-Ukraine summit in Kiev on Friday. "There is an agreement that it will be possible to start negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the European Union this year," as he explained. "Tonight we can say that Ukraine is making progress towards its goal," the Ukrainian president added.

In Kiev, where anti-aircraft sirens sounded twice on Friday, European Council President Charles Michel, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and other senior EU officials met with President Volodimir Zelenski.

"Ukraine is the EU, the EU is Ukraine", said Charles Michel at the end of the summit.

The summit, which is the 24th of its kind, is also the first since Ukraine was granted EU candidate country status and was preceded on Thursday by the first meeting between members of the College of European Commissioners and the Ukrainian government.
