Moldova & Romania boost connectivity with new rail link

Moldova and Romania are set to negotiate a draft agreement on coordinated control at the Cantemir-Fălciu railway border crossing. These joint controls will take place on Romanian territory.

The Moldovan government in Chișinău is expected to authorize its official delegation to negotiate this document at its June 18 session. The delegation will be led by Diana Salcuțan, State Secretary at the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Modernization work is currently underway on the railway lines in both countries and on the bridge over the Prut River. Train service on the Cantemir-Fălciu railway segment is expected to resume by late summer, after a 33-year hiatus.

The Cantemir-Fălciu railway bridge will reopen to traffic after 30 years.

Previously, Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Bolea, the Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development, stated that the Cantemir-Fălciu railway segment was strategically important. Its reopening would allow for better management of goods movement as part of efforts to diversify export routes, and it would connect Moldova's railway freight transport to the European transport network.

Coordinated control has already commenced at the Leușeni-Albița border crossing, specifically for entry into Romania.

It's worth noting that the current railway bridge over the Prut was opened in 1951, built on the site of the original bridge from 1917-1918. The Cantemir-Fălciu railway section was closed in 1992.
