Alexandru Adam is the new director of the National Administration of Penitentiaries

The Ministry of Justice announced that Alexandru Adam, the Deputy Head of the National Administration of Penitentiaries (ANP), has won the competition to become the institution's director.

Alexandru Adam has been the Deputy Head of the National Administration of Penitentiaries (ANP) since April 2025.

The former head of the ANP, Anatolie Falcă, resigned at Prime Minister Dorin Recean's request amid a scandal concerning amendments to the Amnesty Law. These amendments permitted the release of several inmates serving life sentences.

Following the incident, the Ministry of Justice launched an investigation that revealed the ANP had failed to assess the associated risks properly. Consequently, the courts applied the law as it was written, leading to the release of these convicts.

Three officials were suspended as a result of the irregularities uncovered, and 10 employees from the ANP, along with six from Penitentiary No. 17 in Rezina, are currently undergoing disciplinary investigations. Additionally, five former system employees are set to face criminal investigations.

"Civil servants who applied the law negligently will be reviewed by disciplinary committees and sanctioned accordingly," stated Justice Minister Veronica Mihailov-Moraru.
