Moldova boosts defense with €197M EU support
The European Union has provided a total of €197 million in support to the Republic of Moldova for the modernization of its defense system, channeled through the European Peace Facility (EPF).
Over the past four years, these investments have significantly enhanced the capabilities of the National Army in areas such as medical services, military engineering, logistics, transport, communications, information technology, and national airspace surveillance.
Ghenadie Cojocaru, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Defense, states that security and defense will be prominent topics on the agenda of the inaugural Moldova-European Union Summit, hosted by President Maia Sandu at the State Residence on July 4.
"In a context increasingly marked by risks and challenges, security has become a genuine concern, and consequently, the need to strengthen our defense system has become an urgent priority. We cannot do this alone. By investing in defense, we ensure the peace and safety of our citizens are guaranteed. The EU is one of our strategic partners, helping us to protect peace and enhance our resilience to current challenges," affirmed Ghenadie Cojocaru.
It's worth noting that through the European Peace Facility, the National Army has already received ambulances, demining robots, transport vehicles, drones, and medical equipment.
The Moldova-European Union Summit, hosted by President Maia Sandu, is scheduled to begin at 5:00 PM local time. Brussels will be represented at the meeting by European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Discussions during the summit will cover topics related to Moldova's EU accession process, the expansion of economic ties, and cooperation in areas such as infrastructure, energy, digitalization, and regional development. A significant agenda item will also be the €1.9 billion Growth Plan for Moldova, recently adopted by the European Commission.
