Earthquake in Turkey and Syria // Over 15,000 people dead and around 63,000 injured
Rescue teams in Turkey and Syria continue to search for signs of life among the rubble of thousands of buildings, which collapsed in the world's worst earthquake in a decade. According to the latest information, published by Turkish public television, more than 15 thousand people from both countries lost their lives.
At least 12,391 people were killed in Turkey and 62,914 were injured, according to TRTWORLD. In northern Syria the death toll rose to 2,992. Thousands of buildings collapsed.
Among the victims of the earthquake is a mother with her two minor children, originally from the Republic of Moldova, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration announced yesterday. Another 27 compatriots are missing. Rescuers are working against the clock to pull as many survivors as possible from the rubble, almost three days after two large earthquakes struck with more than 300 aftershocks.
In Turkey, seven days of mourning and a state of emergency were announced in ten provinces. The Republic of Moldova and Romania sent rescuers to Turkey. Rescue teams from more than 30 countries are working to clear up the consequences of the earthquake.
On Monday, February 6, a devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 shook southeastern Turkey and parts of Syria. Authorities expect the death toll to continue to rise.
