The EU imposes the tenth package of sanctions on Russia

A new package of sanctions against Russia, but, for the first time, also measures aimed at Iranian companies that produce drones used by Russian forces in Ukraine, were announced on Wednesday by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. During the plenary session of the European Parliament gathered in Strasbourg, with the participation of representatives of the European Council and the European Commission, new support for Ukraine was also discussed.

The European Parliament has sent a strong message of support to Ukraine, both to achieve victory in the aggressive war launched by the Russian Federation and in the EU accession process. The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announcing the tenth package of sanctions against Russia, mentioned that through these actions Russia's ability to keep its war machine active will be weakened. "We adopted nine sanctions packages. Russia's economy is contracting. But we have to keep the pressure on. The EU's 10th package of sanctions includes trade bans and checks on technology exports to Russia, including drones, helicopters and missiles. But the EU must also adopt targeted sanctions against Iranian companies that produce drones used by Russia on the Ukrainian front, including economic operators with ties to the Revolutionary Guards," said Ursula von der Leyen. For his part, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, the vice-president of the European Commission, Josep Borrell, mentioned that this package of sanctions is not enough. According to the official, the EU must take a stronger position, take bolder decisions. "We need to get more involved, we should come up with additional sources so that we can send the tanks that we still have, so that they can reach Ukraine before Russia launches its spring and summer offensive," said Josep Borrell. The final statement of this debate will be voted on on Thursday in the plenary session of the European Parliament.
