FLEX Program: Moldovan students experience American life and community activities

Young people from the Republic of Moldova can experience the American dream for a year by studying at a high school in the United States and living with a host family. The FLEX Program, funded by the U.S. government, allows students to immerse themselves in American culture and lifestyle. They participate in school and community activities, becoming true ambassadors for their country. Adelina and Petru are two individuals who have gone through this unique experience, which has transformed their perspective on the world.

Adelina spent ten months in the United States, where she studied and lived with a welcoming host family that helped her integrate into American culture.

"I had the opportunity to be a student in an American school, and I stayed with a host family with whom I got along extremely well. I participated in various activities, including different American sports. The host family was extraordinary; I always say that this was the most beautiful experience because of them. They made me feel at home," shares the young woman.

This experience gave Adelina a new perspective on education and lifestyle.

“One difference between America and the Republic of Moldova is the attitude of the people. I found them to be much more positive, smiling, and open. The second difference concerns the school curriculum. The educational system is very different; I had the opportunity to choose what I wanted to study. There were a few basic subjects, but I could select what I liked,” explains Adelina Novac.

Petru-Cătălin, another finalist of the FLEX program, lived in a city near Chicago.

"I had the privilege of being hosted by a couple in their 60s, and I had the opportunity to travel to over 20 states. We developed a friendly relationship. One unusual aspect for me was that when we had dinner, we used disposable plates to save time, space, and water—something new for me," recalls the student.

He notes that the U.S. education system offers greater freedom and a wider range of activities.

"In American schools, you can select the level of difficulty for the courses you choose, and you have the option to take various elective classes. For example, I took cooking. I got involved in the international culture club, where I learned about Mexican, American, and Spanish cultures. As an ambassador of my country, I also tried to share my culture in that context," mentions Petru-Cătălin.

The young people expressed that they returned home inspired and eager to foster change in the Republic of Moldova. Now in its 33rd year, the FLEX program has awarded scholarships to over 32,000 lyceum students.
