NATO is sending containers to Turkey for setting up temporary housing
One thousand containers will be delivered by NATO to Turkey to provide temporary housing for at least 4,000 people left homeless following the devastating earthquakes that hit the Turkish-Syrian border region two weeks ago.
A first commercial ship with 600 containers on board left the Italian port of Taranto on Sunday evening, NATO announced in a statement. The containers are expected to arrive in the Turkish coastal city of Iskenderun in Hatay province next week, according to the statement. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg visited Ankara and the earthquake-hit region on Thursday and pledged additional support. NATO is also currently coordinating an airlift to facilitate the transport of tents from Pakistan to Turkey. The total death toll in Turkey and Syria from the earthquake has reached 47,000.
