Nicu Popescu asks the EU to introduce sanctions against the Moldovan oligarchs accused of destabilizing the Republic of Moldova

The Republic of Moldova today asked the European Union to impose sanctions against the Moldovan oligarchs accused of helping Moscow to destabilize the country. The statement was made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nicu Popescu, during the meeting of the Council of Foreign Affairs of the member states.

The head of diplomacy from Chisinau, Nicu Popescu, said during the meeting that the oligarchs and corrupt politicians who, together with Russia, are trying to destabilize the Republic of Moldova, should be placed on a black list of people banned from entering the EU and whose bank assets are frozen by the 27 member states. Nicu Popescu also said that even at this moment Chisinau's priority is to ensure the security of the airspace and society, and for that it needs surveillance and anti-aircraft defense systems. At the same time, European diplomats have already announced that the EU could send experts to the Republic of Moldova to help prevent cyber attacks from Russia. The Estonian Foreign Minister stated that "these oligarchs who are Russia's proxies must be put on the EU sanctions list and must bring increased security support to Ukraine through the European Peace Instrument." We remind you that, last week, Chisinau accused Russia of plotting a coup in the Republic of Moldova. We remind you that the USA and the United Kingdom last year sanctioned two Moldovan oligarchs, Ilan Șor and Vlad Plahotniuc, who in 2019 left the Republic of Moldova. In 2022, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine obtained the status of a candidate country for EU accession.
