Trump's America First strategy shatters Ukraine's NATO hopes

The head of the European Union's (EU) foreign policy, Kaja Kallas, insisted that the United States remains the EU's "greatest ally."

The declaration comes just a day after the release of the new, decidedly nationalist US security strategy by the Trump administration, a strategy that anticipates Europe's "civilizational disappearance," according to AFP.

"Europe has underestimated its own power, especially towards Russia. We should have more confidence in ourselves. The United States is still our greatest ally," Kallas said.

She added, "And it is in the interest of the US that we work together," while speaking at the Doha Forum.

The Trump administration released the document on Friday, December 5, which redefines the "National Security Strategy" in line with the American president's "America First" approach.

The policy document sharply criticizes Europeans. It supports the claims of the far-right that the old continent faces a "civilizational disappearance" due to immigration.

It also explicitly questions Europe's "fruitless obsession with regulatory suffocation."

Furthermore, the document specifies that there will be no NATO expansion, once again shattering Ukraine's hopes for accession.

Ukrainian and American officials are meeting on Saturday, December 6, in Miami, Florida, for the third consecutive day of Ukraine negotiations. The talks are aimed at ending a conflict of over three years with Russia.

On the American side, US President Donald Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff, and the Republican's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, are participating in the talks.

Key figures from Ukraine's delegation include chief negotiator Rustem Umerov and General Andrii Ignatov.
