“Relative in an accident” fraud scheme: Young man sentenced to seven years
He would contact victims and falsely claim that their relatives were involved in road accidents. He requested urgent money transfers for medical expenses or to prevent legal consequences. A 22-year-old man was sentenced to seven years in prison after defrauding several victims and causing damages exceeding 950,000 lei through the "relative involved in the accident" scheme.
Prosecutors report that a series of scams occurred over three days, from June 7 to June 10, 2023. During this time, a 22-year-old individual, aided by several accomplices, extorted money from seven victims.
After conducting phone conversations with the victims, the scammers would visit their homes to collect the demanded amounts, either in lei or in foreign currency.
Recently, the court sentenced the 22-year-old to seven years in a semi-closed prison, taking into account his previous sentences, which had not yet been served. Additionally, the judges prohibited him from holding any positions or engaging in activities related to the management of material assets for three years.
Authorities emphasize that this is not the defendant's first infraction; he has prior convictions for similar offenses. Law enforcement is currently working to identify all accomplices involved in the scams.
