Over 12,000 people suffer strokes yearly in Moldova

Each year, more than 12,000 people in the Republic of Moldova experience a stroke, according to data from the Ministry of Health. While the health system has made progress in stroke treatment in recent years, doctors emphasize the importance of controlling risk factors, which play a crucial role in prevention.

A stroke is a serious medical emergency. It occurs when a part of the brain can no longer receive oxygen and nutrients, either due to a blocked or ruptured blood vessel. In both cases, neurons begin to die within minutes, which is why we often say, "time is brain." Every minute that passes results in the loss of millions of nerve cells. The quicker a patient reaches the hospital, the better the chances of survival and functional recovery," stated Călin Roibu, an anesthesiologist and resuscitator, during the "Zi de Zi" show on Radio Moldova.

The signs of a stroke appear suddenly and should be recognized without delay, according to the specialist:

"Look for facial asymmetry, incoherent speech, or the inability to lift a limb. If you notice these symptoms in someone, do not wait for them to go away—call 112 immediately. Treatment is most effective when administered quickly, ideally within the first few hours after symptoms begin."

Dr. Roibu emphasizes the importance of not waiting for significant warning signs to manage your health:

"Miracles aren’t necessary; what matters is consistency. Monitor your blood pressure, quit smoking, maintain a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and don’t skip annual check-ups. Controlling your blood sugar and cholesterol can have significant long-term benefits. Take care of your brain, as it influences the health of your entire body. While strokes are unforgiving, they can often be prevented. A wise decision made today could save a life tomorrow," he concluded.

In the Republic of Moldova, stroke is the leading cause of disability among adults aged 25 to 65.
