“There are no plans to sell Giurgiulesti Port”, Deputy PM Osmochescu

The Giurgiulesti State Port will not be sold, and authorities are not currently conducting or examining such negotiations, assures Deputy Prime Minister Eugen Osmochescu, Minister of Economy and Digitalization.
In light of recent information regarding potential transactions related to the port infrastructure on the Danube, Osmochescu clarified the legal and functional differences between the Free International Port of Giurgiulesti (PILG) and the State Port of Giurgiulesti. The PILG was established by law in 2005 and is managed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), while the State Port is fully owned by the government and is not currently involved in any transactions.
Osmochescu noted that the EBRD, which oversees the PILG, has "the freedom to enter into commercial relations with other parties."
Addressing the ongoing negotiations between the EBRD and the Port of Constanta in Romania, he emphasized that these discussions do not involve the Republic of Moldova. He stated, "The negotiations between these two private entities are outside the influence of the state of the Republic of Moldova, which does not intervene in any way. It is the free will and free expression of these entities."
The Giurgiulesti International Free Port spans 55 hectares and is being monitored by authorities for its potential impact on the economy, security, and environment, according to the deputy prime minister. He added, "We are monitoring to see the economic impact, the impact on security, as well as the impact on the environment."
Osmochescu also highlighted that, in July 2025, the government approved investments in the Giurgiulesti International Free Port to stimulate economic development. He stated, "Our goal is to attract investments and develop the private sector for the benefit of citizens and the Republic of Moldova."
He assured that the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization will continue to keep the public informed and uphold transparency throughout this process. "We are determined to continue monitoring the situation and ensure total transparency," he concluded.
Romanian MEP Nicu Ștefănuță announced after a meeting on November 18 in Brussels with Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu that Romania has "recently" acquired the Giugiulesti International Free Port.
Following this announcement, the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization clarified that "possible negotiations aimed at cooperation with the Romanian state for the operation of the port infrastructure are part of an ongoing commercial transaction."
The Danube Logistics enterprise, which manages the port, is owned by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
