US envoy Steven Witkoff sets condition for attending peace talks

A high-stakes multilateral meeting focused on Ukraine peace talks is being prepared in Berlin. The summit is expected to take place on December 14 and 15, bringing together US Special Envoy Steven Witkoff, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Discussions will also include Jared Kushner, a key advisor and son-in-law of Donald Trump, as well as other national representatives involved in the ongoing peace negotiations, according to DW.

US authorities have confirmed the planning for the high-level meeting. White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt stated that the US envoy will only travel to Berlin if "a real chance of signing a peace agreement emerges" and if there is a conviction that "these meetings are worth the time invested." This conditionality signals the seriousness required for American participation.

Separately, Chancellor Merz's office in Berlin announced a one-on-one meeting with President Zelensky scheduled for December 15.
