Capital safety prioritized: Ghidighici stormwater drain will be repaired in 2026

The spillway of the Ghidighici dam, located in a suburb of the capital, will undergo complete rehabilitation in 2026, as announced by the Minister of Environment, Gheorghe Hajder. The official emphasized that this project is a crucial investment in the safety of Chisinau and aims to protect the population from flood risks.
According to officials, the intervention is necessary to ensure controlled water evacuation during sudden increases in lake levels caused by heavy rain.
"In 2026, we will fully repair the high-water discharger. Its purpose is to facilitate the controlled evacuation of water in the event of a sudden increase in water level. Protecting water resources and ensuring the safety of citizens against floods is a priority for the government," declared Gheorghe Hajder.
The project involves repairing existing cracks and rehabilitating the spillway to ensure the dam operates safely during heavy rainfall.
Installed in 1962, the spillway is currently damaged, which increases the vulnerability of the hydrotechnical infrastructure.
Lake Ghidighici and its associated dam are recognized as objectives of national importance. They play a crucial role in preventing floods and serve as a strategic water source.
"We are investing in the safety of the Chisinau municipality and the protection of its citizens. Additional significant investments will follow," stated the Minister of Environment.
The rehabilitation of the Ghidighici spillway is part of a broader program aimed at modernizing the hydrotechnical infrastructure in the Republic of Moldova.
At the beginning of December, repair work commenced at the Costești–Stânca dam. This project, valued at 32.7 million lei, aims to ensure the safety of this construction, which is also of national significance. The project involves repairing existing cracks and rehabilitating the spillway to ensure the dam operates safely during heavy rainfall.
