Strong winds and freezing temperatures to hit Moldova as authorities remain on high alert

The Republic of Moldova’s State Hydrometeorological Service (SHS) has issued a new Yellow alert for high winds.
The warning covers the northern, central, and parts of the southern regions, effective from December 30 at 20:00 until December 31 at 17:00.
Wind gusts and icy conditions
Meteorologists forecast North-Western wind gusts reaching speeds of 15–18 meters per second. This weather pattern follows a similar alert active between December 26 and 29, which required over 30 emergency interventions to clear fallen trees across the country.
"This is normal for December when atmospheric gradients often cause wind intensifications," stated meteorologist Natalia Gherasimov. She noted that while today’s wind is weaker than in previous days, such patterns occur almost annually during this period.
New Year's Eve forecast
Light snow is expected on December 31, leading to icy road conditions across the country. On New Year’s Eve, temperatures will drop significantly, with lows ranging between -10°C and -5°C.
A warming trend will begin shortly after the holidays. While January 1 will remain cold with highs between -6°C and -1°C, temperatures are expected to climb to +5°C on January 2 and up to +9°C by January 3.

Emergency response and safety
Municipal authorities in Chisinau confirmed that intervention teams are ready to deploy if conditions worsen. Residents are encouraged to report any weather-related incidents to the Central Municipal Dispatch.
Emergency contacts include (022) 22-22-67, (022) 22-26-04, or the general emergency number 112. Drivers are urged to exercise caution due to the high risk of ice on national roads.
