Chisinau police station shooting: High-ranking officials dismissed amid cover-up allegations

Moldovan prosecutors have launched a criminal investigation into "aggravated hooliganism" following a high-profile shooting incident inside Chisinau’s Central Police Inspectorate.

The General Prosecutor's Office confirmed the probe after a police officer reportedly discharged a service weapon inside the headquarters during National Police Day celebrations.

The incident, which occurred during the night of December 18-19, 2025, has already triggered significant administrative fallout. Lilian Luca, the head of the Central Police Inspectorate, and his deputy, Sergiu Muruz, were dismissed from their posts alongside the officer directly involved in the shooting.

Violina Moraru, spokesperson for the General Prosecutor’s Office, stated that investigators have initiated a comprehensive forensic audit. "The prosecution has ordered a ballistic expertise of the weapon and conducted interviews with multiple officers," Moraru noted, adding that surveillance footage and relevant documentation have been seized to establish the full circumstances.

The case only reached the public domain on December 22, after Member of Parliament Vasile Costiuc alleged that multiple shots were fired following a physical altercation. Costiuc also raised concerns regarding potential attempts by local authorities to conceal the gravity of the breach.

Under the Moldovan Penal Code, a conviction for aggravated hooliganism carries a prison sentence ranging from 3 to 7 years. Prosecutors indicated that further procedural measures will be determined as evidence continues to be gathered from the crime scene and eyewitness testimonies.
